Applications for domain name extension registrations are to open in spring next year, according to one representative.
A spokesperson from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has said that it is possible new address extensions will be granted next year for those wanting to register with a new suffix.
The process is likely to be major undertaking to those applying, but, it was added, if there is a "controversy-free one that meets all the technical and financial requirements" it may be promptly approved.
"What this process that ICANN is opening up represents is [individuals] looking to become the dotcom itself," explained the professional.
"You're not applying to become a dotcom web address, you're applying to become a registry like dotcom," he added.
Writing earlier on the process, UK newspaper The Guardian stated that ICANN will be the figures approving all of the name requests and the process will "not come cheap" - with some expecting to cost around £250,000.
